What’s In My Travel Bag? Part 2: Makeup

I plan on doing a ton of makeup shopping in Texas, so I tried to restrain myself in the packing department! I fit everything into a relatively small cosmetics bag which is no easy feat for a makeup junkie :)

On to the goods!

Let’s start with face base products. I’m bringing my favourite primer – the Smashbox Photo Finish Light Oil-Free Foundation Primer. I have a ton of primer samples, but none of them were large enough for the week so I would have had to use a different one every few days which I worried would be a bit aggravating to my skin. For foundation I chose the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup SPF 20 since it provides light-medium coverage (read: more sweat-proof!) and it is my only foundation with SPF (necessary for being outside in the sun).

I am bringing two concealers, the Coastal Scents Bright Eyed Eye Brightener which I have been using under my eyes (more detail in my April Favourites) as well as the Make Up For Ever Full Cover Extreme Camouflage Cream which I use to counteract redness/provide extra coverage where needed.

For powder I am bringing the Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder in Translucent and a Laura Mercier Velour Puff for application. I like to use this after my foundation/concealer has been applied in order to set my base and remove any oiliness.

My favourite types of products – cheer highlight/colour/contour! I am bringing a sample of the Benefit High Beam Luminescent Complexion Enhancer since I have been wanting to try this out and it makes much more sense to bring a tiny tube which can be applied with the fingertips vs. a MAC Mineralize Skin Finish and contour brush. I am bringing two MAC Powder BlushesDame as my cool-toned pink, and Springsheen as my warm-toned coral. I may also crack and bring Frankly Scarlet which I love! NARS Laguna, my go-to bronzer is on the packing list too, and I will use MAC Fix+ to mist my face, restore dewiness, and remove any powdery appearance.

I was especially proud of the restraint I showed with eye products! I am bringing two small eye primers – the Too Faced Shadow Insurance in Candlelight and the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion. I have used the UD sample quite a bit and thought I may run out partway through the week. These two combined take up less space than a full-sized Primer Potion or MAC Paint Pot.

For shadow, I’m just bringing one quad – the Maybelline Expert Wear Eyeshadow Quad in 02Q Natural Smokes (swatches in image below). I plan on buying a few Wet n’ Wild palettes on my trip, so I will likely use those later in the week.

I’m packing two eyeliners – one black (Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Perversion) and one dark brown (MAC Eye Kohl in Teddy).

My brow products will be the same as always – MAC Charcoal Brown Matte Eyeshadow applied with an Anastasia Double-ended Spooley/Angled Brush and set with E.L.F. Wet Gloss Lash & Brow Clear Mascara.

Lastly, I am bringing my Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler and two mascaras – Maybelline Full N’ Soft Mascara for daytime/less dramatic looks and L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara for nighttime/more dramatic looks. I anticipate I’ll be taking some pictures of Looks/Outfits of the Day during my trip so I wanted makeup options that would show up well on camera, in addition to products that support a more natural look.

I plan on buying a few new lipsticks, so I am only bringing a few lip products: the Sephora Nano Lip Liner in 04 Candid Candy, MAC Frost Lipstick in Angel, and NARS Turkish Delight Lip Gloss.

Like my toiletry bag, my travel makeup bag is also from Forever 21 and was quite inexpensive. I love the leopard print and pink – very girly and perfect to hold makeup!

For brushes, I am going to bring my Sigma Mrs. Bunny Blue Travel Kit (haul/first impressions here) – it will be a good opportunity to try out some of the brushes in the kit that I haven’t used much.

What’s in your travel makeup bag?

  1. hi kate!

i have a question about Benefit High Beam – what’s your recommended way to apply it? (how & where?)

i got a trial size bottle in one of the sephora ‘glitz & glam’ sampler boxes – but whenever i’ve tried to use it, it doesn’t look very good…

any tips would be helpful. not sure if you’ve posted about highlighter anywhere else on your blog – or even another resource like a youtube vid! thanks.

    • Hi Jenn!

Great post idea! In the meantime I will find a YouTube video that shows it – I’ll post something today :)

      • Okay here’s a good video showing how to use High Beam specifically:

You can also apply highlighter down the top of your nose, on your cupid’s bow (to make your lips look fuller!) and on your chin.

        Hope that helps!
