Given this trend, a few weeks ago I went on the hunt for products that would revive the appearance of my skin and be workable with all of my foundations and BB creams. This way, I can dial up the dewiness and brightness of my skin no matter the foundation shade or coverage, or current state of my skin.

Enter MAC Strobe Cream and MAC Prep + Prime Highlighter in Lightboost. This duo has been rocking my makeup routine world and are likely to remain staples in my collection.

According to the MAC website, Strobe Cream is “[t]he ultimate quick fix for the skin. Super-powered with potent botanicals; de-snoozes, de-stresses, moistens, freshens and boosts the look of dull, flat or tired-looking skin with a fully loaded vitamin zap and a mega dose of green tea. Brightens and clarifies with iridescent particles and antioxidants. Enhances the effects of light on all skin and in all lighting conditions from sunlight to spotlight.”

Beautypedia gives it a glowing review, and it’s easy to see why. This product is incredibly versatile, working as a moisturizer, a primer, a dewy boost to mix with foundation, and/or as a highlighter. I’ve been mixing a small drop in with my foundation for a more radiant glow, and the effect is quite natural. A little goes a long way making it good value.

A few tips for those interested in Strobe Cream:

1. Check out reviews for both Strobe Cream and Strobe Liquid to see which is more appealing to you. Strobe Cream tends to receive higher ratings and is supposedly more versatile (Strobe Liquid is supposedly more of a liquid highlighter – think Benefit High Beam).

2. Opt for the small travel size vs. the full size, even if you have to buy two. The reason for this is that the travel size is $12 CAD for 30mL whereas the full size is $40 CAD for 50mL – much better value with the travel size! Plus, it is more portable and a great way to test out the product with a smaller commitment.

3. Start small – mix in only a touch with your foundation and build up as you wish. You can always add extra product as a highlight on the top of your cheekbones, down the length of your nose, and on the cupid’s bow above your top lip.

The other dynamite product in this duo is the MAC Prep + Prime Highlighter described by MAC as “a pen-style highlighter that efficiently brings a soft sheer wash of colour to the skin. With its precision application, adds radiance just where you want it. Goes on smoothly for cushion-soft wear. Use over makeup for highlights, touch-ups or under makeup to brighten and prime.” It is available in three shades: Light Boost, a “soft yellow’ (and the one I chose), Radiant Rose, a “light shell pink”, and Bright Forecast, a “mid tone peachy coral”. According to Beautypedia’s positive review, all three are workable provided they are matched with the right skin tone.

I’ve been using this product after foundation and concealer to highlight and brighten my skin. I’ve been applying it in a triangle shape – a horizontal line under my eye, a vertical line down my cheek right next to my nose, and then connecting those two lines with a diagonal line that stretches from my outer eye to the bottom of my nose. I then fill in the triangle lightly, and blend. You could also use this product in a similar fashion to brighten down the length of the nose, the middle bottom of the forehead, around the nose, and on the chin, Kim Kardashian style:

I’ve included some swatches below to give you a sense of the textures and shades of each product. As you can see, Strobe Cream is a white somewhat iridescent gel-like cream that sheers out when applied, and Prep + Prime Highlighter is a lightweight almost watery yellow-toned cream.
