January 2013 Beauty Favourites

This month, in addition to using some new products I had picked up, I rediscovered some older faves. I love it when that happens!

My first skincare favourite is the CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion PM, which I use as my night cream. As I’ve mentioned before, I have dehydrated skin and look for products containing hyaluronic acid which can combat this condition. This product has a smooth, silky texture, doesn’t break me out, and does a great job at keeping my skin moisturized. Its daytime counterpart (the CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion AM) is good as well, but I don’t like its consistency very much. It contains SPF 30 has a thick, sunscreen like texture. I will likely continue using both products, but much prefer the nighttime option.

Next up is another hyaluronic acid skincare product: the Now Solutions Hyaluronic Acid Firming Serum. While this is marketed towards “mature skin” (as hyaluronic acid’s moisturizing properties help combat the signs of aging), I use this under my moisturizer day and night for extra hydration. A little goes a long way, it has a pleasant orange fragrance, and it dries quickly. My skin appears to be less dehydrated (it appears almost normal, actually!) since using this in combination with the other CeraVe skincare products.

I don’t often have standout hair products, but I’ve recently been taking better care of my hair and using more products. The first is the Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Restorative Styling Oil. After washing my hair and letting it dry slightly, I take three drops of this oil in my hands and evenly disperse it into the middle and ends of my hair. I find it helps to reduce frizz, add moisture to my hair, and make it a bit more manageable.

Once my hair is dry and has either been straightened or curled, I use a cream to smooth my hair and reduce the appearance of fly-aways. I’ve been using the delicious vanilla-scented Live Clean Exotic Nectar Argan Oil Smooth & Shine Cream. When using a small amount of cream, it doesn’t weigh my hair down or leave it looking greasy, and adds some polish and shine to my style.

Moving on to makeup! I did a post a few weeks ago showing you my custom palette purchases from MAC, both of which made it into this month’s favourites. The first one is an eye shadow duo that I use for my brow powders: Omega (left) and Charcoal Brown (right). I use Omega now that my hair is lighter, but I mix in some Charcoal Brown for the outer parts of my brows that require more definition. If I want a stronger brow, I will mix the two shades together, and if I go back to my dark brown hair colour, I will use Charcoal Brown only. This makes it a really versatile duo.

I’ve also been using the eyeshadow quad I picked up – this one contains Nylon, Naked Lunch, Quarry, and Satin Taupe. These are staple MAC shades that can help create a variety of pretty daytime or evening looks.

This is an absolutely beautiful highlight powder that looks increadibly natural and is a joy to use.  Unfortuately, my compact broke this month when I accidentally dropped it, but the powder is intact and as gorgeous as ever. :) For a full post with swatches, click here.

Given I used up my Urban Decay dark brown eyeliner this month, I’ve been using (and loving!) the MAC Eye Kohl in Teddy, defined by MAC as “intense bronze”. To me this is more of a medium- to dark brown with subtle gold shimmer (not picked up in this photo). This is more prone to smudging than the Urban Decay liner, but isn’t too messy or high-maintenance – I just make sure to wipe away any smudging if I see it happening. I like wearing this on the outside third of my top and bottom lashline for a subtle, more natural look that still defines my eyes.

Last is the Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Polish in Bunny, a pretty peachy-pink shade in a plumping, thick, glossy format. This makes my lips shiny while adding a hint of colour and can be applied without a mirror.

  2. I completely agree about the daytime CeraVe moisturizer. I use the PM during the day! :) It’s been my favorite for almost a year now. UGH that Amber Diamond is so pretty!! Nice finds. :)
