I recently picked up the 2012 Essie Wedding Collection (which came in a cute 4-piece mini set!) and wanted to provide a mini-review on my thoughts. The collection comes with four colours: Love & Acceptance (a light, dusty lilac), Who Is The Boss (light grey-mint green), Instant Hot (white with pink undertone), and Like To Be Bad (light pink). They all have a cream finish and are very feminine and wearable.
Here’s the collection:
And some swatches:
Colours: A. While I find the purple and green shades to be a bit dull for everyday wear, the collection delivers on being suitable for a wedding. I do like how these shades all leverage spring nail polish trends but tone them down to make them more wearable. For those of you who need professional looking nails but like to wear on-trend colour, this is a great collection for you!
Colour Payoff: B-. It took three coats to reach creamy opacity which, while more common with pastels, should not be the case for a higher quality/priced brand like Essie. I don’t find their other pastel shades to need three coats to be wearable.
Application: C. I found these to be quite streaky and the application to be uneven, even though I used a base coat.
Finish: B. While the cream finish is lovely in these shades, they lack a high amount of shine, even with a top coat. Again, this could be due to the fact that they are designed to be more subdued.
Value: C-. The 4-pack of minis was $19.99 CAD which is $5/polish or $1/mL. Given Essie retails for $8.99-11.99/full size bottle or $0.67-0.89/mL, the mini pack is more costly which in my opinion is counter-intuitive since there should be some sort of discount associated with purchasing all four. Provided the full-sized polishes are priced the same as the permanent Essie polishes, the value is somewhat better on those.
Overall Rating: C. The colours are unique, but poor application and mediocre finish and colour payoff prevent this from being a stand-out collection. I do really like Like To Be Bad and will likely wear that shade quite a bit.
Have you tried out any of these shades yet? What do you think of the collection?
