Merry Christmas to those of you celebrating today!
Today’s beauty tip is one I’ve mentioned before in previous posts, but I thought it warranted its own overview. While primers and setting sprays often tout they make make-up last longer, they aren’t always as effective as layering wet and dry products.
The example I will use today is with highlighting products. These can be used on the tops of the cheekbones to add a dewy glow, down the length of the nose to make it look straighter, above the cupid’s bow of the lips to make lips look fuller, and on the eyes (inner corner and browbone) to open and highlight them.
To make your highlight last all day, first start by applying a liquid or cream product. These blend beautifully into the skin and act as a natural-looking base. Some of my favourites are below: NARS The Multiple in Copacabana (cream), MAC Cream Colour Base in Shell (cream), Benefit High Beam (liquid), and Benefit Moon Beam (liquid).
Once this has been applied, go over it with a powder product. The powder will adhere better to the cream/liquid base than it would to skin alone, and the powder product will set the base, locking in any moisture so that the base product does not melt off. A few of my favourite powder highlight products are below: MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in Soft and Gentle (left) and NARS Blush in Albatross (right).
You can do the same with almost every other makeup type:
- Foundation/face base with pressed pigmented or transluscent powder
- Cream or liquid blush with powder blush
- Cream or liquid bronzer with powder bronzer
- Cream eyeshadow or eyeshadow base (i.e. jumbo eye pencil) with powder eyeshadow
- Kohl or kajal eyeliner with eyeshadow (on an angled brush)
Have a lovely day off!

Great article! Sometimes I get in a hurry and forget to apply powder. Thanks for the reminder. I use L’Oreal MagiLumi Highlighter. Love the click pen style.
Thanks, Celeste! I’ve heard great things about the L’Oreal MagiLumi Highlighter too.
